When deciding what the best gel pens are, the first thing to do is test them all side by side. Doing this allows you to see the difference and decide what will work best for your project at hand. I wanted to show you the best gel pens and how they compare, so I did this test on black paper.
Here are the pens that I tested for this post:

How the White Pens & Inks Were Tested
I tested this collection of white gel pens on black, 160 gsm dot grid paper made by Archer & Olive.
I chose three styles to test the flow of ink and pen consistency. I did not go back and fill in any gaps in the lines. This test was a one-pass test to see if the pens were consistent from beginning to end. I will let the results speak for themselves.
Here are some of my favorite things about these pens:
The design of the pen is comfortable for daily writing and drawing.
The white ink is beautifully opaque and shows boldly on black paper with one stroke.
They write smoothly and consistently.
It comes in three different line sizes that work for fine detail and bold writing or surface covering. (Sizes: 05, 08, 10)
I use these pens over other art mediums, once dry, to add finishing detail and highlights. Scroll down in this post to see all the different ways you can use these pens!
This pen has a smooth flowing ink that is great for lettering on most surfaces.
It contains opaque white gel that shows up boldly on any paper color.
This pen is also great for filling in large areas or drawing details on other art mediums.
This pen surprised me! It’s re-designed from the original Milky pens Pentel created many years ago. I love the new design of the pen because it fits nicely in hand.
The white gel has an excellent consistency for fluid writing motions and does not have any skipping when writing.
These pens create a crisp line with a single stroke.
Excellent for stippling details or dot work!
Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Pens
These pens produce a more transparent white on black paper. They are not gel pens like the ones listed above.
They give a very calming touch to any piece you’re creating if you are not looking for a bold white effect.
They have multiple tips and sizes to choose from, including a brush pen!
Sharpie Extra Fine White Paint Pen
This pen is oil-based; this is different from all other pens in this test.
I used this ink with my glass dip pen! This technique was new to me, but the ink was fun to use. No bleeding whatsoever! It held the line perfectly and felt like a natural ink pen.
Smooth writing consistency.
The white ink is opaque and showed up well on black paper.
It dried quickly on paper but did not dry out on my dip pen!
